The body of a person who has been missing from Forrest County since last summer may have been located in Covington County on Wednesday, and an investigation into the remains is ongoing.
The Forrest County Sheriff’s Office, with consultation from the 12th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, followed up on information regarding the possible site of the body of a missing person from Forrest County.
A team of several deputies began searching the area and subsequently located human remains at about 3 p.m. Wednesday. A crime scene was established and members of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the extraction of the remains, according to Scott Lees, Forrest County Public Information Officer.
The skeletal remains were located in southeast Covington County in the Sanford community. The remains were sent to medical examiners for identification, but are believed to be those of a woman that has been missing from Forrest County since last summer.
Additional details from the investigation will be released as soon as they become available.
