Covington County residents were warned by the Sheriff’s Office that using off-road vehicles during “parades” or public roadways are not just illegal, but unsafe.

“When you put off-road vehicles with adults and children, and the likelihood of impairment along with this, people’s lives in danger,” Sheriff Darrell Perkins said. “Off-road vehicles are prohibited from being on public roads and highways, according to Mississippi State Law. Anyone who operates an off-road vehicle on the public roads are subject to a fine of not less than $25 and not more than $50.”

Anyone who participates in any way to one of these events can also be charged with disorderly conduct by failing to comply with requests or commands of law enforcement officers. Anyone charged with this statute are subject to a $500 fine and/or six months in the county jail.

“It is good to have community events,” Perkins said. “There are places where these events can be held without disruption of public roads and law violations. Please keep your friends, family, and children in mind when making these conscious decisions and be safe.”
