November 25, 1960

Laurel (8-2) edged Hattiesburg (4-6) on Thanksgiving Day, 27-20, in the annual Little Brown Jug game. James Nichols scored on two short runs while Scott Coffield hit Clifton Prince on a 28-yard TD pass. Steve O’Neil also scored on a 9-yard interception return for Laurel.

November 25, 1995

McComb ended the visiting Northeast Tigers' (11-2) season in the South State 4-A championship game, 13-7. Lee Gavin scored the only Tiger TD with a 5-yard run.

November 25, 2000

McComb blanked Laurel, 14-0, in the South State Championship game. Laurel ends the season at 13-1.

November 27, 1960

Mississippi State upset Ole Miss, 19-14, in Oxford as Frank Dowsing intercepted a Shug Chumbler pass at the MSU 2-yard line. Bulldogs quarterback Joe Reed passed to Lewis Grubbs for one score and ran for another. Ole Miss (7-2) played without quarterback Archie Manning.

November 27, 2010

Brookhaven (9-4) came from behind to nip West Jones (12-1) in the South State Championship game, 27-26. Ben Stevens passed for two scores as he hit Xavier Hilton on a 48-yarder and Devontay Barnett on a 7-yarder. Barnett also scored on a 2-yard run while Ben McDonald recovered a fumble for a TD.

November 28, 1970

Laurel (8-3) beat Meridian, 34-6, for the first time since 1962. Benny Hinton ran for 24 yards and 1 yard for scores to go with 146 rushing yards. Butch Chadwell ran 48 yards, Jimmy Howard ran for 32 yards, and Willie Triplett ran for 28 yards for other Tornadoes scores.

November 29, 1965

Diane King pumped in 20 points and Janie Bryant added 10 points as Northeast Jones rolled over Bay Springs, 58-38. Johnny Staples scored 16 points and Kenny Holifield added 11 points as NEJ nipped Bay Springs, 43-41.

November 29, 1980

Tony Wheat scored 29 points as Laurel rolled over Heidelberg, 78-53.

November 30, 1960

Jerry Welch scored 26 points in leading Laurel over Glade, 64-47. Irving Hitt and Jimmy Brannon each scored a dozen points for the winners. Mike Pitts and Ronnie Holifield each scored 11 points for Glade.

Ole Miss football coach Johnny Vaught was named Look Magazine Coach of the Year. End Johnny Brewer, quarterback Jake Gibbs and lineman Richard Price, along with Mississippi’s State lineman Tim Goode, were also named to the All-SEC team.

December 1, 1995

The Dennis Bohannon coached West Jones Lady Mustangs soccer team downed Northeast Jones, 7-0. Becky Hollingsworth led the attack with four goals while Ashley Evans, Bridgette Smith and Andrea Bargar also tallied scores.

December 2, 2000

Laurel coach Buddy Duke was named the District 5-4A Coach of the Year for leading the Tornadoes to a 13-1 season. The District 5-4A coaches also honored the following players as most valuable at their positions: Laurel quarterback Troy Wolverton was named Most Valuable Back; South Jones linebacker Jonathan Robertson was named Most Valuable Lineman; Laurel’s Chris Triplett was named Most Valuable Offensive Lineman; Laurel’s Jermaine Ramson was named Most Valuable Defensive Back; West Jones punter Luke Johnson was named Most Valuable Punter; and Mendenhall’s Jimbo Thornton was named Most Valuable Kicker.
