December 3, 1960

Sulphur, Louisiana blanked Laurel, 13-0, in the 21stannual Shrimp Bowl in Biloxi. Laurel quarterback Scott Coffield passed for 153 yards to lead the Tornadoes. Kenny Biglane took home the Best Sportsmanship Award while end Ray Davis was named Best Lineman in the game.

December 3, 1980

Wanda Marsh hit an 8-foot jumper with 10 seconds to play to lead Northeast Jones over Columbia, 43-41. Melissa Douglas led the winners with 13 points followed by Polly Keyes with 12 points.

The MHSAA executive council voted 22-1 to begin State Football Championship in all classes beginning in1981, according to Director Woodrow Marsh.

December 4, 1995

Samantha Crosby scored a game high 19 points and Ericka Slayton chipped in 17 points as West Jones downed Columbia, 54-50, to win the Richton Rotary Tournament.

December 5, 1980

Reed Longo hit a jumper with 3 seconds to play to give JCJC the lead over Prentiss, 75-73, in JUCO action. Stanley Ward led the Bobcats with 23 points. Linda Darty pumped in 29 points as the Lady Bobcats won, 108-60, over Prentiss.

December 6, 1970

LSU (8-2) returned three punts for scores in demolishing Ole Miss, 61-17, to secure the SEC football championship and an invite to the Orange Bowl. Ole Miss (7-3) will play Auburn in the Gator Bowl.

December 6, 2000

Robbie Knight scored twice in leading Northeast over South Jones, 3-1. Amanda Smith scored all four goals in the game as South Jones blanked NEJ, 4-0.

December 7, 1970

Three Jones County Junior College Bobcats were named to the first team All-State football team. Quarterback David Cooley, defensive lineman Butch Cupit, and defensive back Bruce Gresham earned the honors.

December 7, 2000

Thomas Hosey and Jerome George of Laurel and punter Luke Johnson of West Jones were named to the first-team All-State Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 5-A team. Chris Starr, Chris Tripplet and Alonzo Nix were named to the second team.

December 8, 1955

Thirty-seven Jones Bobcats football players were bused to Jackson to board a charter flight to Los Angeles. JCJC will battle Compton JC in the 10thannual Little Rose Bowl.

December 8, 1960

Laurel Tornado Clinton “Red” Taylor, a 200-pound receiver, has signed a football scholarship with Ole Miss.

December 9, 1995

Terri Tatum scored 19 points in leading Laurel over West Jones, 56-52. Kim Page added 13 points for the winners while Sonya McLaurin led WJ with 17 points.
