A quick response by several Volunteer Fire Departments saved a home from total destruction Thursday evening.

According to Dana Bumgardner with the Jones County Fire Council, Glade, Powers, M&M, Sandersville, and Rustin Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a structure fire at approximately 7:51 p.m. Thursday evening at 205 Victory Road in Laurel.

The homeowner, Trey Upchurch, and his wife were reportedly relaxing at their home cooking dinner when Upchurch smelled an odor coming from his son’s bedroom. When Upchurch opened the door, smoke billowed from the door.

The Upchurch’s immediately evacuated the single-story brick home and contacted emergency services.

Thanks to the quick response from the firefighters, the fire was reportedly contained to just the bedroom area, however, there was smoke damage throughout the home and all structural damage was contained to just the son’s bedroom. The rest of the home was reportedly intact.

Per the press release, no injuries were reported during the incident to the family or firefighters who contained the fire. EMServ Ambulance Service and the Jones County Sheriff's Department were also on scene during the incident.
