The Laurel City Council had its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday where several things were approved and a Public Works Supervisor and his crew were recognized.
Laurel Public Works Supervisor Vincent Townsend and his crew were recognized during the meeting with a Certificate of Appreciation for their excellent work over the past 12 months.
“They work very hard. I see them out working each day,” said Marva Posey who presented the award to Townsend. “I think it is past time to recognize what Mr. Townsend and these men do, Mr. Townsend is a very hard worker for the city of Laurel.”
Mayor Johnny Magee added to Mrs. Posey’s comments.
“We are very proud of what these men do. Even during the pandemic, they are out working hard and safely,” said Mayor Magee.
Several lots across the city were approved to be cleared and cut by the city during Public Hearing time, including one lot that will be exterminated due to vermin affecting the property of other homeowners.
One home on 1605 South 11th Street was considered dilapidated, however, the new owner of the property spoke at the meeting stating he intended on repairing the property. He was granted 120 more days by the council to give him added time to make necessary repairs.
An order was also approved for Kristal Jones and Lauren Stewart to attend the required 2021 Municipal Election Training event which is scheduled for January 19, 2021, in Gulfport, Mississippi.
It was also approved by the council to approve certain budget amendments for the FY 2021 budget.
The Council will meet again the first week of January for their regularly scheduled meeting where there could be a motion to realign Wards in the city due to the 2020 Census
