A motor vehicle accident near the Highway 29 overpass on Highway 84 West stopped traffic on HWY 84 for approximately an hour and a half Tuesday night.

Calhoun, Pleasant Ridge, and Hebron volunteer fire departments responded to the incident at 8:32 p.m.

An 18 wheeler traveling East on Highway 84 struck a Hyundai Santa Fe head on.

Witnesses reported the Santa Fe was traveling off Highway 29, but traveling towards HWY 84 on the on ramp to Highway 29 South.

When the Santa Fe reached 84's eastbound lanes [with the car facing West], it impacted the 18-wheeler. The car was pushed further east several feet away from the initial point of impact and ended up in the middle of the two eastbound lanes. Debris from the wreck littered HWY 84 and the 18-wheeler stopped in the median.

Both vehicles sustained major damage in the incident, with the female requiring extrication from the mangled Santa Fe by the firefighters on scene.

The sole female passenger in the Santa Fe was taken to a local emergency department by EMServ Ambulance Service with critical injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler sustained minor injuries. He was headed home to Jackson, Alabama, at the time the incident occurred.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, and Jones County EMA officials also responded to the incident. The crash will be investigated by the MHP.
