Wednesday, September 9, several members of the Nahoula Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution gathered at Laurel City Hall to witness the signing of a proclamation by Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee proclaiming the week of September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week in the City of Laurel.

The proclamation states, “September 17, 2020 marks the two hundred, thirty-third anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the Unites States of America by the Constitutional Convention. Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week.”

With the signing of the proclamation the City of Laurel joins in the celebration of this great document, the longest lasting constitution in the world.

“We do this every year as part of our efforts to bring awareness to this great document and its legacy,” said Mary Ann Hess, DAR State Parliamentarian. “It is a living, breathing document. After over two hundred years, it is still relevant today.”

The Nahoula Chapter members will place educational packets in the schools for the teachers to share with the children to help them learn about the constitution.

“Each library gets age-appropriate books, like “Ssh! We’re Writing the Constitution,” said Cindy Rice, Nahoula Chapter Regent. “At noon on September 17 all the church bells will ring across the city and county to mark the signing of the constitution two-hundred, thirty-three years ago.”

The proclamation urges citizens to “reaffirm the ideals the framers of the constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained.”
