Jackson, Miss. (April 29, 2019) – Established in 2003, National Healthy Vision Month was designed to raise awareness of the importance of making vision health a priority. There are currently millions of Americans living with undiagnosed vision problems, eye diseases and conditions. The first step to combat this statistic is to make an appointment for a comprehensive eye exam regardless of age and health history.
“Routine eye exams can tell a lot about our eye health as well as our overall health,” said Alex C. Whittington, M.D., JEA physician. “From diabetic control to high blood pressure, these systemic diseases can affect the eyes and an exam can determine if damage is occurring or not.”
Here are a few everyday tips you can implement to help preserve healthy vision.
- Wear Sunglasses – Even on cloudy days, the sun’s UV rays can damage your vision. Look for sunglasses that block out at least 99% of UVA and UVB radiation.
- Eat Healthy – Carrots are great for your vision, but it is vital to incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet.
- Get Plenty of Physical Activity – Regular physical activity can assist in protecting your eyes from serious diseases.
- Rest Your Eyes – Staring at a computer screen or phone for long periods of time can tire your eyes very quickly, so it is imperative to practice the 20-20-20 rule throughout the day. The 20-20-20 is looking away from the screen every 20 minutes and focus on something about 20 feet in front of you for at least 20 seconds.
- Protect Your Eyes – Whether for work or play, it is essential to wear the necessary protective eyewear, such as safety glasses, goggle and safety shields.
With 80% of vision complications being avoidable and curable, it is never too early to begin taking preventative measures to protect your vision. If you have noticed a change in your vision or have never received an eye exam, use National Healthy Vision Month as motivation to call and make an appointment.
