Jones County Sheriff Deputies found themselves in a foot chase after a suspect accused of stealing a vehicle fled the scene of a traffic stop.

The suspect, identified as Justin Hughes, was spotted and taken into custody by JCSD deputies following a foot chase through the woods across from Laurel Middle School. 

Per a press release from the JCSD, a Jones County Sheriff's Department deputy stopped a vehicle that was reported stolen on Monday afternoon on Interstate 59 northbound at the 16th Avenue exit. The adult male driver immediately exited the vehicle and took of running into the woods headed toward Grandview Drive.

Multiple units from JCSD and the Laurel Police Department converged in the area and began searching the woods and securing the perimeter.

Hughes was booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Facility on a charge of Stolen Vehicle. Currently, no bond has been set per the Jones County Sheriff's Department's website.

It was also noted that additional charges may be added as the investigation proceeds.
