It was a busy Sunday for the volunteer fire services in Jones County.

The first major call came in Sunday afternoon as a structure fire on Ben Moffett Road sent firefighters out to eradicate the flames. Upon arrival, the first fire apparatus found an abandoned home fully engulfed in flames with a large area around the home also burned.

A burning trash pile near the home is believed to be the cause of the incident. The home sustained catastrophic damage according to reports.

Hebron, Calhoun, and Pleasant Ridge volunteer fire departments responded to the fire. The Jones County Sheriffs Department was also on scene, however, no injuries were reported.

Later at 3:27 p.m., the Sandersville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle rollover On Bonner Road.

The driver stated he lost control of his Chevrolet Tahoe, which caused the vehicle to roll over. He was properly restrained and suffered only minor injuries. Equipment malfunction is believed to be a contributing factor to the incident.

Sandersville Police Department and Jones County Sheriff’s Officer were also on scene, as well as personnel from Powers VFD.

Finally, Union and Moselle volunteer fire departments responded to a vehicle versus a power pole on Turkey Springs Road in the Union community Sunday evening.

A man drove his Chevrolet Silverado 3500 into a power pole, breaking it in two and blocking the road. He then left the scene and traveled to New Hope Road, where he ran into a brick framed mailbox.

One of the witnesses to that incident said that when the vehicle hit the mailbox, “it exploded with bricks and dust everywhere.”

The driver fled the scene and is still being sought by the Jones County Sheriffs Department. If residents have any information, please contact the JCSD.
