Jones County - It's been a busy weekend for the fire service in Jones County. Along with many medical calls and minor calls for service, two major incidents happened over the course of 12 hours.
The Sandersville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the report of a camper on fire at 536 Claiborne Road, just north of Sandersville. Upon arrival at the scene, fire personnel found the large camper fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters began a defensive attack and were able to stabilize two propane tanks that were near the residents without incident.
The resident of the camper, James Dean, said he had left the camper just thirty to forty minutes earlier. Neighbors activated 911 after they spotted flames and heavy smoke. The neighbors were able to save the dog at the camper and the four-wheeler, but a lawnmower was lost.
No injuries were reported. Sandersville Police Department was also on scene.
Later, at approximately 4:50 a.m. Sunday morning, Ovett and Johnson Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the report of a head-on collision on Highway 29 at Ovett-Moselle Road.
Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters found a Ford in the northbound lane of Highway 29 and a Cadillac off the roadway on the southbound side.
Both sustained major damage.
The Ford's driver stated the Cadillac was traveling south, while he was traveling north, toward Ellisville. The Cadillac began drifting in the northbound lane just prior to the collision.
Each vehicle had one occupant and both were treated at the scene for minor injuries. One declined transport to the emergency department while the other who sustained serious injuries was transported for treatment by Emserv Ambulance Service.
Highway 29 was blocked for roughly an hour while emergency crews cleared the roadway of the disabled vehicles and debris, which was littered over the highway.
Jones County Sheriff's Office and the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
