Motorists traveling south from Laurel on Interstate 59 faced long delays Tuesday afternoon, May 7, as officials worked to clear an accident scene that resulted from a collision between Laurel and Ellisville. The collision took the life of Laurel resident Savannah Newell, age 30.
According to information released Wednesday morning by Sergeant Travis Luck, MHP Troop J spokesperson, an 18-wheeler traveling south on I-59 was stopped due to a construction zone. The passenger vehicle traveling south approached the 18-wheeler and other vehicles stopped in the roadway, lost control and then collided into the 18-wheeler. The driver of passenger vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene. She was driving a white 2006 Pontiac GT.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Darwyn L. Bethune Jr., was transported to the Laurel hospital for a precautionary check. The driver of the 18-wheeler is an out of state driver from Georgia. He was driving a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia.
Both drivers were wearing seat-belts.
