Week 5 of high school football season is here. Here are James Pugh and Kevan Lindsey's predictions for 11 games involving teams from the Impact601 area.
Minor High (Adamsville, AL) at Laurel
Laurel is a winner this week regardless of Friday night’s outcome.
After missing a week due to COVID protocols, the Tornadoes will suit up this Friday night for the first time in two weeks.
Florence, scheduled to play Laurel Friday night, had to cancel due to their battle with COVID protocols. Therefore it gives Laurel a win to start a brutal Region 3-5A schedule.
Laurel found an opponent (Minor High from Adamsville, AL) to make the trip to Laurel to play a much-needed second on-field game of the season.
I have no clue against this Alabama team rolling into the SIP, but with all the wins for Laurel this week, why not go for another W to add to the list.
James’ Prediction: Laurel 35, Minor High 6.
Brookhaven at West Jones
West Jones opens Region 3-5A with Brookhaven on Friday night.
Brookhaven has had decent teams over the past decade, but nowhere on the level of a West Jones.
The Panthers (1-3) haven't been thoroughly tested yet - at least on a level the Mustangs will test you.
West Jones might be a little rusty out the gate, not having played last week, but Brookhaven will be choking on dust by the second half.
James’ Prediction: West Jones 34, Brookhaven 10.
South Jones at Wayne County
I'll be honest, during the preseason, this was a game both Kevan and I had circled on the calendar as possible upset potential. But after seeing last week's performance against Northeast Jones, it would seriously surprise me to see South Jones upset Wayne County.
Stranger things have happened.
James’ Prediction: Wayne County 27, South Jones 14.
Northeast Jones at East Marion
Here come the Tigers!
We knew Northeast Jones would be improved in 2021. We didn’t know they’d be this much improved, especially on offense.
What the Tigers did last week against South Jones was brutal, rushing for over 300 yards and holding South Jones in negative yardage on the ground.
If the Tigers can have that kind of success this week on the road, they'll be living up a fourth win on the season before starting Region 5-4A play.
James’ Prediction: NEJ 29, East Marion 8.
Madison-Ridgeland Academy at Raleigh
You can’t say that Raleigh is afraid to put anyone on the schedule. The Lions play host to MRA and it should be a dogfight. The Patriots are 3-3 on the season, but don’t let that fool you as they’ve faced stiff competition, but have outscored their opponents 77-14 in the past two weeks. Raleigh comes into this game undefeated with victories over Taylorsville and Seminary, but this will be their toughest task yet.
Raleigh is one of the best teams in 3A football, but I can’t pick them this week. MRA rolls out of Smith County carrying a W.
Kevan’s prediction: MRA 36, Raleigh 18
Wayne Academy at Sylva-Bay
“OK, we won a game yesterday. If we win today, it's called "two in a row". And if we win again tomorrow, it's called a "winning streak"... It has happened before!” - Major League
The Saints have won two in a row and could be looking at three in a row and a winning streak if they defeat the Jaguars from Wayne Academy Friday night. That’s a big if though as Wayne Academy is talented in their own right. If you compare common opponents, Sylva-Bay defeated Bowling Green 7-6 while Wayne Academy defeated the same Bowling Green 49-0.
Sorry, Saints. Enjoy the two weeks of wins. It ends here.
Kevan’s prediction: Wayne Academy 41, Sylva-Bay 23
Richton at Bay Springs
Boy, was I wrong last week. Scott Central took it to Bay Springs, defeating them 26-12. Maybe there are chinks in the armor of the Bulldogs. They’ll need to get those fixed if they want to be considered one of the better teams in football this season. Still, with that said, a motivated Bay Springs is not a good sign for Richton.
The Rebels won’t know what hit them and will have to look to get back in the win column next week when they face Lumberton. Bay Springs takes out their frustrations.
Kevan’s prediction: Bay Springs 45, Richton 8
Heidelberg at Northeast Lauderdale
Heidelberg desperately needs a win. The Oilers have not been in the win column since October 18, 2019, nearly two years ago.
It is time.
The Oilers face a Northeast Lauderdale team that is 1-3 on the season with their lone victory over Southeast Lauderdale. It is unfortunate that the Oilers likely get their first win on the road, but a win is still a win and it will be nice for Jimbo Nowell to get his first win in Oilers gear.
Kevan’s prediction: Heidelberg 24, Northeast Lauderdale 16
Loyd Star 20, Stringer 12
Wesson 27, Mize 18
Enterprise-Lincoln 31, Taylorsville 24
James, 4-1. (Jones County Predictions)
Kevan, 10-1 (Jasper and Smith Predictions)
