A motor vehicle incident involving a Tacoma and an 18-wheeler on Highway 84 near Highway 28 left one dead Wednesday evening. The man who was driving a Toyota Tacoma was traveling east on Highway 84 and rear-ended an 18-wheeler at approximately 6:17 p.m., leaving the Toyota pickup destroyed.
Calhoun, Sharon, and South Jones Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the incident and upon arrival, firefighters rendered the pick-up truck driver emergency medical care until EMServ Ambulance Service arrived.
The fire departments also assisted with traffic control as the eastbound lanes were shut down for approximately 15 minutes with then only one lane open for over 45 minutes.
Firefighters on the scene reported seeing no skid marks behind the 18-wheeler and speed is believed to be a significant factor in the collision.
The deceased man was the sole passenger in the Toyota Tacoma.
The driver of the 18-wheeler sustained only minor injuries and declined transport to the emergency department by ambulance.
Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Jones County Sheriff's Department were also on scene, as well as officials from the coroner's office.
