Southern Miss defenders celebrate in the second half against Grambling.

While it was not pretty at times offensively, the Southern Miss offense led by Frank Gore Jr.’s 162 rushing yards pulled away in the second half, while the defense shut out Grambling to get their first win, 37-0, of the 2021 season, and Will Hall’s first win as head coach of Southern Miss.

Southern Miss scored on their second drive of the game when Lowe found Jason Brownlee on a 12-yard passing touchdown. A Briggs Bourgeois PAT gave the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead. The drive totaled 10 plays and 68 yards.

Neither team could make much happen throughout the first half, as Southern Miss was forced to punt on two of their drives and missed a field goal on another. The Golden Eagles did put three points on the board with 12;37 to go in the second quarter as Bourgeois connected on a 40-yard field goal to give them a 10-0 lead that they took into the locker room at the half.

The Southern Miss defense forced five punts in the opening half, with Grambling attempting a 47-yard field goal that fell short of the pylons.

Former Taylorsville standout Ty Keyes made his debut for the Golden Eagles at the start of the second half after Lowe did not return from halftime with a foot sprain. Keyes finished his debut going 4-11 with 50 passing yards. He also ran for 56 yards on 8 attempts.

Frank Gore Jr. gave the Golden Eagles a spark and three-possession lead with 7:22 left in the third quarter when he found a seam to the right side, scurrying for a 51-yard touchdown run. The successful PAT put Southern Miss up 17-0.

Another Bourgeois field goal, this time from 25 yards out, with 60 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave Southern Miss a 20-0 lead.

Southern Miss put another 17 points on the board in the fourth quarter as Dajon Richard scored on a 27-yard touchdown run, Bourgeois connected on a 34-yard field goal, and Keyes connected with Jakarius Caston for his first collegiate touchdown pass to go up 37-0.

Southern Miss moves to 1-1 on the season and will face troy at home next Saturday at 6 p.m.
