A Saturday night shooting left one man deceased and another charged with murder, according to Laurel Police Chief Tommy Cox.
"On Saturday at approximately 9:21 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Brown Circle on a shooting complaint," said Chief Cox.
"Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene," continued Chief Cox.
The victim was identified as Derrick Christopher Wilkins, 41, of Laurel.
The suspect was identified as Travon C. Morgan, 25, of Faulkner, Arkansas. Morgan had his initial appearance in Laurel Municipal Court where he was charged with one count of murder and one count of grand larceny by Judge Kyle Robertson. His bond was set at $755,000, with $5,000 being the grand larceny charge.
"At the scene, a suspect was developed and a vehicle description issued to other agencies via BOLO," said Chief Cox.
"A short time later, the suspect vehicle was spotted by a Jones County Sheriff’s Deputy on I-59. The deputy gave chase and the suspect vehicle wrecked on I-59, continued Chief Cox.
The wreck happened near the Heidelberg exit.
"The suspect fled into the woods and was not arrested at this time. At approximately 5:00 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody by deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and transported to the Jones County Jail," added Chief Cox.
Investigator Blakeney was the assigned officer to lead in the case.
"The Laurel Police Department wishes to extend its condolences to the family of Mr. Wilkins. The Laurel Police Department would like to thank The Jones County Sheriff’s Department, The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Constable Danny Gibson for their assistance in this case," concluded Chief Cox.
