A Wednesday night incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian resulted in one death on Interstate 59.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department assisted the Mississippi Highway Patrol with a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian at roughly 7:40 p.m. on Highway 11 North near Redbud Drive between Laurel and Sandersville.

According to a release from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, MHP responded to US 11 near I-59, in Jones County, for a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian incident. Preliminary investigation revealed that a Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Bonnie Ledet of Lumberton, was traveling north on US 11. The Chevrolet collided with a pedestrian in the roadway. The pedestrian, Kerri Kelley, 29, from Laurel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation, per Sgt. Travis Luck of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.
