HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior outfielder Madison Rayner was named to the 2021 C-USA preseason softball All-Conference team, the league announced Thursday.
The Stringer, Miss. Native, and former Stringer Attendance Center all-star was leading the nation in triples last season and was one of only two Golden Eagles hitting above .400 before the COVID-19 shutdown in March.
When she first arrived as a true freshman on campus, Rayner started every game of her first season accruing 40 hits, 20 RBIs, five doubles, a triple and two home runs. She ended the season posting a .258 batting average and a .985 fielding percentage.
Rayner showed tremendous promise in her sophomore season leading the Eagles in almost every statistic. She notched a ten-game hitting streak ranging from (2/23-3/6/20). She finished the campaign with a .418 batting average (23-55), four doubles, six triples and two home runs on 22 games played.
She had a standout performance against Alabama State (3/1/20) where she scored three runs, had three hits and two RBIs to go along with a home run.
Defensively, Rayner has been sure handed in the Golden Eagle outfield. Over her career she has recorded 87 putouts while only committing two errors. Rayner has a career fielding percentage of .985 and remains a corner stone on the Golden Eagles' defense.
Southern Miss head softball coach Brian Levin on Rayner being named to the C-USA Softball Preseason All-Conference Team
"Madison started 2020 on fire. What was impressive was her ability to maintain that level of performance up until the season was cut short. She is the type of player that goes out and gives her all every pitch. Madison is all business. She is well deserving of being named a preseason all-conference performer. We are looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us this year!"
On what is already a highly anticipated year, the local fan favorite will look to continue her success on the diamond in 2021 as she enters into her junior season with the Golden Eagles.
