Everitt Cunningham scores Southern Miss' lone touchdown of the evening.

As good as the Southern Miss defense was Saturday night, the offense was on the other end of the spectrum as the Golden Eagles fell to Troy 21-9.

Southern Miss struck first on their opening possession with a 46-yard field goal from Briggs Bourgeois to go up 3-0. Ty Keyes, who made his first Division-I start for the Golden Eagles went 3-3 for 39 yards on the drive.

After the initial field goal, it became a battle for field position, with 10 combined punts for each team. Southern Miss did force two turnovers, with a forced fumble from Santrell Latham that was recovered by Eriq Kitchen, then the Golden Eagles recovered a fumble after a botched snap when Troy attempted to tie things up with a field goal of their own in the second quarter.

The first half ended with a missed Bourgeois field goal from 41-yards out. Southern Miss held Troy to just 88 total yards of offense in the half.

Things changed for the Troy offense in the third quarter as they scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, including on their opening drive.

Their first score of the night came on a 17-yard pass from Taylor Powell to Jabre Barber. The PAT gave the Trojans a 7-3 lead with 12:53 left in the third quarter. The second of the quarter came on a 16-yard pass from Powell to Deyunkrea Lewis. Another PAT gave Troy a 14-3 lead.

Troy finished the contest with nine sacks on the evening, allowing just 46 yards in the second half, and 156 yards in the contest. Southern Miss gave up a total of 304 yards.

Troy capped off their scoring on the night with an eight-yard rushing touchdown from Kimani Vidal to take a 21-3 lead after the PAT. The drive took five plays totaling 24 yards.

With 3:04 left in the contest Everitt Cunningham recovered a Troy fumble, taking it 47 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked but gave the Golden Eagles their lone touchdown on the evening.
