James Rayner being placed into custody by JCSD Deputy Jason Mills.

A Jones County man was taken into custody following a chase and crash involving a ATV and then fleeing from the Emergency Room at South Central Regional Medical Center.

James Rayner was spotted riding a ATV on Burnt Bridge Road in the Pendorff Community and fled from JCSD Investigator Reuben Bishop when a traffic stop was attempted.

Rayner turned on Pruitt Road and continued at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway and crashing into a ravine. He reported injuries and was transported by EMSERV Ambulance Service to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment. Once in the emergency room, and after donning a hospital gown, Rayner fled the facility on foot. He was captured a short time later on South 17th Avenue in Laurel behind BancorpSouth Bank still wearing the hospital gown.

Sheriff Joe Berlin notes, “We greatly appreciate the assistance of the Laurel Police Department in effecting the capture of James Rayner while he was still wearing the SCRMC hospital gown. It’s never a good idea to run from law enforcement whether on a ATV, in a vehicle, or on foot. Wearing a hospital gown while running down the road is a good indicator that something is amiss.”

Rayner was charged with Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct, and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Meth).
