Former Laurel basketball star Eddie Ruth scored 29 points in leading William Carey over Spring Hill, 83-78. Former West Jones star Karen Myrick’s 15 points led the Lady Crusaders over Spring Hill, 78-63.

January 14, 1987

Terryl Ulmer’s 15 points led West Jones over NE Jones, 35-34. Ferris Ellis led the Tigers with 10 points.

January 14, 1997

The Laurel Tornadoes (14-1) were ranked sixth statewide in the AP Prep Poll.

January 15, 1992

Shandoya Gavin's bucket with six seconds to play led Laurel over West Jones, 55-54. Gavin led the Lady Tornadoes with 17 points while Kim Drummond added 14 points. Jervis Hayes scored 26 points as Laurel defeated West Jones, 90-72. Garrick Thornton added 22 points for the winners.

January 15, 1997

Derrick Martin burned the nets for 36 points as Laurel rolled over NE Jones 86-62.

January 16, 1957

Ann Touchstone scored 30 points while Willie Holder and Mary Ann Purvis each chipped in 15 points as Glade downed Shady Grove, 61-54. Clara Burnett led Shady Grove with 40 points.

January 16, 1997

Laurel outfielder Michiah Beard signed a baseball scholarship with Okaloosa-Walton Community College.

Katie Stennett and Brittany Moss scored goals as Laurel blanked West Jones, 2-0. Jeremy Young's, Britt Barefoot's and Adam Saul's goals led West Jones over Laurel, 4-2. Nick Turan and John Turner scored for the Tornadoes.

Carlos McDaniel scored 37 points in leading JCJC over East Central, 94-81. Carl Bass added 21 points for the Bobcats.

January 17, 1987

JCJC quarterback and former Northeast Jones Tiger Chris Thornton signed with Nichols State. Richard Johnson of West Jones signed with Marion Institute.

January 18, 1982

Melvin Butler scored 21 points in leading West Jones over Laurel, 50-39, in the Jones County Tournament. Joey Coleman’s 13 points led South Jones over Northeast Jones, 65-38. Virgil Powe scored 22 points and hauled in 11 rebounds in leading JCJC over East Central, 82-80, in double overtime. Clarence Darby hit 7-of-8 free throws in overtime as he added 18 points for the Bobcats.

Ashley Hughes scored four goals as Laurel blanked Petal, 9-0, in soccer play. Ben Beasley’s two goals led to an upset win over No. 9 Petal, 2-1.

January 19, 1972

Eugene Short’s 26 points led Hattiesburg over Laurel, 52-43. Anthony Jones led the Tornadoes with 18 points while Steve Pitts added ten points. Thomas Moody scored 21 points and Ben Staples added 18 points in leading Northeast Jones over Newton, 77-64. Charlotte Wells scored 19 points and Nan Grantham added a dozen points in leading the NEJ Lady Tigers over Newton, 60-27. Mac Crosby scored 18 points and Mark Sumrall added 15 points in leading West Jones over Collins, 60-46. Elaine Windham’s 17 points led West Jones over Collins, 56-30.

January 19, 1982

Jim Carmody was named head football coach at Southern Mississippi. Carmody replaced Laurel native Bobby Collins, who accepted the SMU head coaching position.
