A Jasper County man has been arrested by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and has been charged with three counts of sexual battery.
Garrett William Mangum, 28, was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Department through a warrant on Monday (July 19) at a residence north of Bay Springs. He is accused of the sexual battery charges, at the time the incidents allegedly took place at a residence near Stringer, against two minors.
Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson said Tuesday afternoon investigations have led his department in the direction that the alleged crimes charged against Mangum could have been occurring over the past five years, possibly longer.
“The original report was made to Smith County (Sheriff’s Department) late last week. When it was looked into, it was turned over to us because it became obvious the alleged crime had taken place in our county,” he explained. “Investigator Jody White is working the case, and has conducted interviews. There will be more forensic interviews to come.”
Sheriff Johnson went on to clarify that a forensic interview has been set up later this week with one of the alleged victims and a specialist that deals with child related sexual crimes. Due to the age of the victims and with the case being an ongoing investigation of a sexual nature, Johnson could not release many other details.
“I cannot give out much detailed information at this time because of the age of the victims, plus we don’t give out information about sexual victims. We don’t pass that kind of information out, but it is still actively being investigated,” he explained.
Mangum remains behind bars at the Jasper County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond set by Jasper County Justice Court Judge Marvin Jones.
