Fifteen years ago, teaching English at a camp halfway across the globe, I listened to a Moldavian pastor as he urged college-age students in his country to consider pursuing journalism.
At the time — and probably more so today — the media in his country pushed agendas opposite to the Christian faith. I remember thinking to myself, ‘who would want to be a journalist? Certainly, not me.’
Have you ever heard someone say, ‘God laughs at the plans we make?’ That day, halfway across the globe, God must have laughed at me. Five years later, I found myself working for a newspaper as a photojournalist.
It began with a passion for photography. Months after buying a new camera and discovering a new hobby, a sportswriter contacted me about the opportunity to freelance as a sports photographer. I politely declined and thought nothing about it in the days that followed. If it had not been for his persistence, I probably wouldn’t be in the situation I find myself today.
After several days had passed, he called again. This time I said yes.
Photography led to writing, and writing led to a Sports Editor’s position years later.
For the past six years, I have served as Sports Editor for two newspapers. It’s been the best two jobs I’ve ever had. I can honestly say that when you have a job you enjoy, it’s never ‘work.’
One week ago, I began a new journey after accepting the role of Co-Editor along with my friend and co-worker Kevan Lindsey. I had planned to stay full-time in sports for several more years, but again, God often laughs at ‘our’ plans and places us on His path. So here I am.
I’m excited for what the future holds. I’m eager to cover more than just sports, reaching out into news coverage, newspaper layout, and more. As you might have noticed, this edition looks a little different than what it’s looked like in the past.
Jones County has been my home for a few years now. There’s something special about this place and the people here. I look forward to continuing to highlight the stories that come from this place and surrounding areas.
