An 18-wheeler carrying a full load of liquid fat used as an additive in chicken feed turned over at 7th Street and Hillcrest Tuesday morning, October 15 just a few blocks from his destination at the Sanderson Farms Feed Mill. According to officials on the scene, the driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured.
Laurel Fire Chief Mark Nichols said the driver made too wide of a turn onto 7th Street from Hillcrest Drive and rolled over into the ditch.
According to Nichols, the liquid fat material was leaking into the ditch and steps were taken to dam up the liquid and remove it from the ditch and the tanker with the help of B-Clean in Laurel.
“The material isn’t hazardous, but we don’t need it flowing into a creek or stream,” said Nichols.
Responding to the incident were Laurel Fire Department, Laurel Police Department, and Jones County Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Paul Sheffield.
