A Meridian man was tragically killed Wednesday night on a stretch of I-59 in Jasper County when he was struck by a vehicle while he was walking for help after having a vehicle accident.
According to MHP spokesman Sgt. Andy West out of Troop H in Meridian, 31-year-old Antonio R. Dunnigan was identified as the victim.
West went on to explain Dunnigan had run off the interstate and into the median north of Heidelberg at mile marker 116 and was walking in the left, southbound lane to get help. The driver of a 2016 Toyota Scion , a 77-year-old Maryland man, could not see Dunnigan in the roadway due to heavy rains.
The accident happened at 8:56 p.m. north of mile marker 114 while remnants of Hurricane Zeta were causing heavy downpours throughout the area.
