The City of Laurel recently announced on their Facebook page a new public outreach initiative from the Laurel Police Department. A message from the LPD stated, “The Laurel Police Department is launching a new public outreach initiative aimed at keeping our senior citizens safe. The Senior Citizens Initiative has been in the planning stage for a while, but now seems to be the perfect time to kick it off. We are asking the public to help by providing LPD with the name, address, and telephone number of senior citizens in our community who may not have the family support structure locally to check on them regularly. It is the goal of the program to call the citizens two times per month and visit with them at least once per month. Obviously, the home visit part of the initiative may have to be modified during our current crisis. We want to ensure that our senior citizens have a contact to help them or to direct them to those that can. Anyone who wants to submit a name for our list may contact the following LPD personnel: Chief Cox 601-399-4440 ext. 132, Administrative Assistant Pickering - ext. 137, Victims Advocate Cooper – ext. 138, Captain Reed – ext. 133, and Captain Caraway – ext. 143. LPD would like to thank the public, in advance, for any assistance in getting this initiative off the ground.”
