Bail denied for Powers Community murder suspect

Suspected murderer, Adam Larry Mills, makes his initial appearance in Jones County Justice Court Friday afternoon, June 5.

Adam Mills, who was taken into custody Thursday morning by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and charged with first-degree murder, made his initial appearance before Judge Billie Graham in the Jones County Justice Court Friday afternoon, June 5.

Mills is suspected of murdering his girlfriend, 28-year-old Ashley Pearson. Graham denied bail, citing previous felony charges and that “the presumption of guilt is great,” given the amount of evidence collected at the scene by investigators.

According to the Jones County District Attorney’s office, Mills has pending felony charges of possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was out on a $15,000 bond for these two felony charges.

Mills pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge in April of this year involving another female, an ex-girlfriend. He has also been convicted in the past of assault on a police officer when he was involved in an altercation with former Deputy James White that resulted in White’s leg being broken.

“Mr. Mills, there is no greater crime than the charge of taking the life of another person,” stated Graham. “I am revoking your bail, and I’m appointing an attorney to represent you.”
