Heidelberg man charged with aggravated assault after allegedly trying to strangle fiancé

Charles James Johnson, 68, was arrested by the Jasper County Sheriff's Department Sunday morning in Heidelberg after allegedly trying to strangle his fiancé during an altercation.

A 68-year-old Heidelberg man has been arrested by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department for allegedly trying to strangle his fiancé during an altercation.

According to Investigator Daniel Gilmore, Charles James Johnson was taken into custody by the department after it responded to call at a Heidelberg residence Sunday at approximately 10 a.m. Gilmore said the victim had visible marks on her neck and was injured seriously enough during the quarrel that she had to be transported to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel.

“The victim did say her breathing was obstructed during the altercation, and she did have visible marks on her neck,” Gilmore mentioned.

Johnson is a convicted felon out of Texas, and Gilmore mentioned two firearms were also recovered by the department at the residence.

Johnson has been charged with aggravated domestic violence and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

He has been released from the Jasper County Jail on a $1,000 bond set by Jasper County Justice Court Judge Marvin Jones.
