The Eagle’s Nest, a food pantry serving students on the Hattiesburg campus of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), has received a monetary donation from Venture Church just in time for the approaching holidays.

“We were so excited to recently host a Night of Worship on USM’s campus, and we knew we wanted to incorporate an opportunity to give back to the community, so partnering with a charity on campus made sense,” said Timmy Ruhnke, Venture Church Student and College Pastor. “Plus, it’s extra special to make an impact on an organization that so closely aligns with our passion for serving college students.”

The Eagle's Nest food pantry provides food, hygiene products and school supplies to Southern Miss students and employees who are experiencing temporary challenges.

Located in The Hub on the Hattiesburg campus, Eagle’s Nest food pantry has provided resources such as food, hygiene products and school supplies for Southern Miss students and employees who are temporarily experiencing challenges since 2016.

“Just during September and October alone, more than 2,600 pounds of food have been distributed. With a large population of non-traditional and international students, the food pantry meets the most basic needs of members of the Southern Miss community who may be struggling to stay on track in their education,” said Dr. Tamara Hurst, associate professor of Social Work and Eagle's Nest adviser.

A growing trend among university campuses across the United States, food pantries are filling a void created by increases in the cost of tuition and the cost of living. Currently open on Wednesdays and Fridays, Eagle’s Nest serves between 35-45 individuals daily. Donations may be dropped off at Eagle's Nest, located in the basement of The Hub.
