Court Gavel

A 36-year-old Hattiesburg man was sentenced in federal court Thursday by Senior U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett for possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.

Juan Carlos Brewster received 108 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Special Agent in Charge Brad Byerley with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Special Agent in Charge Michelle Sutphin with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Mississippi.

On Feb. 11, 2019, Brewster sold 224 grams of methamphetamine to an individual. Forensic analysis by the DEA showed the methamphetamine was determined to be 99 percent pure. Brewster was indicted on Sept. 25, 2019, and pleaded guilty before Judge Starrett on Jan. 30, 2020.

This case is part of Project EJECT, an initiative by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods and Project Guardian.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Hattiesburg Police Department investigated the case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew W. Eichner.
