"National Police Week is May 10-16. It is a time when we recognize and remember those in law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the preceding years. In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Sadly, due to COVID-19, we at the Jones County Sheriff's Department have been forced to cancel plans for a public memorial service this year.
"We at the Jones County Sheriff's Department solemnly remember Jones County Deputy Randy Chancellor, Jones 10, who was killed in the line of duty on February 28, 2001. We pray for his family, honor his service, remember his sacrifice and commit ourselves to continue his legacy of service to the residents of Jones County.
"In 2019, 146 law enforcement officers lost their lives in the line of duty. So far in 2020, 72 law enforcement officers have made the supreme sacrifice. Law enforcement remains a dangerous profession, yet it is a vitally important function of civil government.
"Please pray for all who valiantly serve in law enforcement in these perilous times. We covet your prayers and thank you for your support!"
