Lamar County residents who plan to participate in the annual tree giveaway this year had better get to the distribution site early, Lisa Browning told the board of supervisors earlier this week.
“We’ve got 1,200 trees that will be given away free,” she said. “The giveaway begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Lamar County Multipurpose Center in Purvis. We had 1,000 trees last year and they were gone in 20 minutes.”
Browning, who works with the Lamar County Soil and Water Conservation District, said the Mississippi Forestry Commission and the Mississippi State Extension Service are joining to give out the Mississippi native hardwood tree seedlings on a first-come, first-served basis.
The types of trees that will be given out are red mulberry, white oak, green ash, river birch, persimmon, red oak and Chickasaw plum. For more information, contact Browning at 601.794.5600.
