Johnson, Ovett, and Glade volunteer fire departments responded to 35 Dogwood Road in the Johnson Community for a structure fire Friday about 1:00 p.m. Several residents were home at the time of the incident and barely escaped the single wide mobile home when it quickly became engulfed in flames. Susan Smith and her father were in a bedroom in the east side of the home when they heard a popping sound. Going to investigate, they found flames engulfing half the home.
Upon arrival of the first responding fire units, the mobile home was fully involved. The home sustained major damage in the blaze and the family's cat perished. Ms. Smith reported that they had experienced electrical problems in the rooms on the west side of the home, with plugins burning and breakers frequently being thrown.
Dixie Electric Power Association was also on scene.
The Jones County Fire Council would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to seek the help of a qualified electrician any time they experience electrical problems in their homes or businesses.
FIRE ON DALLAS BROWNLEE ROAD
Several Jones County volunteer fire departments responded to a structure fire at 10 Dallas Brownlee Road in the Rustin community on Friday evening at 10:30 p.m. Homeowner Christina Whigham reportedly was sleeping when she awakened suddenly with the feeling that she couldn't breathe. When she left her bedroom, Whigham found her stove on fire and it was quickly spreading to the remainder of the kitchen.
Upon arrival of the first responding fire apparatus, the single wide mobile home was partially engulfed in flames. Firefighters performed an interior attack and quickly got the fire extinguished. The home sustained major damage.
Whigham escaped the blaze unharmed, as did the family's potbellied pig. Whigham's two teenage daughters were not home at the time. No injuries were reported.
