The Hattiesburg Police Department is continuing to investigate the traffic accident on Sunday, July 14, that killed a retired officer who was a 24-year veteran of the department.
Former Lt. John Smith Jr., 76, died after being involved in a crash on Hardy Street, HPD spokesman Ryan Moore said.
The two-vehicle collision happened in front of Merit Health Wesley about 4:45 p.m. Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital by Lamar County Coroner Cody Creel after the accident.
The other driver involved in the crash was not hurt. Moore said Thursday no criminal charges have been filed, but the crash is still under investigation.
The Hattiesburg Police Department announced Smith’s death on Facebook. He retired from HPD in 1994.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, 1 Convention Center Plaza, Hattiesburg, with burial to follow at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, 883 Hwy. 42 E., Petal.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Lake Terrace Convention Center.
