The body of an 18-year-old has been transported to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy following a deadly shooting that claimed his life Saturday evening in Bay Springs.

The victim in the shooting was Alonzo Shelby of Bay Springs.

“The Bay Springs Police Department responded to a call Saturday evening at approximately 6:20 p.m. at the Mississippi Housing Authority apartments located on West 4th Avenue in Bay Springs behind Sonic,” said Bay Springs Police Department Assistant Chief Eric Winfrey. “Once on scene the department found a black male, 18-year-old Alonzo Shelby, deceased as a result of a fatal gunshot. We have a suspect in custody. This matter is still under investigation. We will learn more facts after we receive the autopsy results from the State Examiner’s Office.”

Camron Crosby, 16, of Bay Springs has been charged in the murder of Shelby. Crosby is in custody and had his initial hearing Tuesday, June 23 in Justice Court in Bay Springs before Judge Sullivan Dukes. His bond was set at $175,000.

“We are all very saddened that a life has been lost,” Winfrey said. “We are diligently investigating this crime, and are here to serve and protect our community.”

Winfrey did say that the weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered, but he maintained no other information could be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
