UPDATED: Officials have now identified the deceased, apparently a woman from Missouri. Her name was just released: Cindy Canfield, an 80-year-old woman, who was driving the Nissan Rogue. Officials report that the accident is still under investigation.
Hattiesburg police officers are investigating an accident on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 24, that claimed the life of an unidentified woman.
The accident occurred in the 4800 block of Highway 49 about 1 p.m. when a Nissan Rogue tried to cross westbound and collided with a Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling north.
The female driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured in the collision.
Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said he has been unable to contact the victim’s family early Sunday afternoon, but he believed she was not a Hattiesburg resident.
