A Bay Springs man indicted on eight felony counts involving a shooting spree that endangered local law enforcement officers in August 2018 has been deemed by mental health officials competent to stand trial.
Stanley McGlaston was ordered by Circuit Judge Stanley Sorey to undergo a mental evaluation in August 2019. McGlaston appeared with his attorney, Jeanne T. Pacific, in Covington County Circuit Court Friday, and it was revealed he is competent to stand trial.
“The court found McGlaston competent to stand trial at the hearing,” District Attorney Matt Sullivan said Monday.
A trial date has been set for February 5 at the Jasper County Courthouse.
McGlaston, 55, is accused of firing a gun at four Jasper County Sheriff’s Department SWAT members while they were trying to execute a felony drug arrest warrant on him at his residence in the Nazareth Community on August 31, 2018. He is also accused of possessing four firearms as a convicted felon during the time of the shooting.
McGlaston, in August 2019, pled not guilty to all charges involved in the case. Judge Sorey, at that hearing, granted the mental evaluation as a court standard. He was sent to be mentally evaluated at the Forensic Services of Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield, Miss.
McGlaston’s bond has been set at $1 million.
