President Ronald Reagan issued a Proclamation creating the first National Sanctity of Human Life Day in January 1984 and it included these words: “We have been given the precious gift of human life, made more precious still by our births in or pilgrimages to a land of freedom. It is fitting then, on the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade (1973) that struck down State antiabortion laws, that we reflect anew on the blessings and on our corresponding responsibility to guard with care the lives and freedoms of even the weakest of our fellow human beings.”
In honor of National Sanctity of Human Life Day, Laurel Choices Clinic Executive Director Brittany Sherman, along with Jones County Sherriff Alex Hodge and local pastor and missionary Luke Johnson, came together on the steps of the Jones County Courthouse in Laurel to advocate the importance and value of human life.
The value of human life is intrinsic, for it derives from God, who made human beings in his own image (Gen. 1:26-27). Life is a sacred gift that is meant to be cherished and guarded. The value and dignity of human life is derived from God the Creator and is rooted in the fact that all humans have been created in God’s image. As stewards of the life of God has given, we are to uphold its sanctity from conception to the grave. Based on God’s love, we are able to extend self-giving compassion and care for those who are suffering or vulnerable – preborn or born, young and old.
