The Hattiesburg Public School District’s 2020-21 school year will not officially start until Monday, Aug. 17, after the School Board set the date and the initial classroom methods at their Aug. 4 meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Williams told students, parents and staff members in an email that during the first three weeks of school, neither traditional in-person instruction nor Hybrid alternating school days will be offered. All students will start the year remotely.
“Tiger Family, we apologize for any inconveniences, but please know that our commitment to our families is one in which safety is a top priority,” he said. “Please be mindful that circumstances are constantly changing and that all plans are subject to change.”
Williams thanked the parents and asked for their cooperation.
“We appreciate your support and willingness to adjust as we work together to make the best, most informed health, safety, and academic decisions for our students, staff, and community,” he said.
In Hattiesburg’s Restart & Recovery Plan, Phase 1 from Aug. 17 to Sept. 4 will have all schools using online virtual/distance learning as instruction for all students grades Pre-K through 12th grade.
In Phase 2 from Sept. 8-Oct. 19, schools will begin in-person Hybrid instruction on alternating assigned days according to a student's last name.
