A Sanford man was charged with murder Monday and was held with $1 million in bond by Justice Court Judge Bobby Wayne Mooney, after he was deemed a suspect in a Sunday shooting.
James Caves turned himself into the Covington County Sheriff’s Office on Monday. The firearm from the Sunday incident was located at another location and taken as evidence.
Paul Edward Pierce, 46, was shot several times at his home on Evergreen Church Road south of Collins, said Covington County Coroner Chris DaQuila. The coroner said he was called to the scene about 7 p.m. Sunday.
When deputies arrived at Pierce’s location, the victim was lying on the floor next to the doorway with gunshot wounds. Caves had already left the scene before deputies arrived. Paramedics arrived on scene and the victim was pronounced dead.
DaQuila said Pierce’s body was sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.
