The storms that have been passing through the Pine Belt for the past two days spawned lightning that knocked out the Lamar County Sheriff’s Department’s main power Monday, Sheriff Danny Rigel said.

The backup power kicked in and essential operations were never affected, he said.

“We’re on battery backup,” Rigel said. “We can't send anything on the computer because the Internet is down. It didn't mess up communications; that's totally different building.”

Rigel said repairs were being made to the electrical system Monday night.

“We're good,” he said. “It's just down right now; we're on auxiliary power and we’re on backup power for both of the computers in the office.

“Mississippi Power is working on it now, and it’s not a problem for operations at all.”

Currently, the forecast calls for more rain. It's 78 degrees.
