HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi clinic is starting a program that will allow patients to drop off unused prescription opioids and other medications.

The Hattiesburg American reports the Hattiesburg Clinic is working with the Mississippi State Medical Association Alliance to start the opioid collection initiative. The initiative begins April 11.

Hattiesburg Clinic patients will be able to drop their medications into a secure MedReturn collection box that will then be collected by the Hattiesburg Police Department. The police will weigh and record the contents before delivering the drugs to the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics for destruction.

The clinic is also working with the Alliance on another campaign called "In the Bag." This campaign will provide medication disposal pouches to the public as a way to safely dispose of unneeded medications.
