The scholarship is made possible by an educational expense reimbursement program established by the Friends of SMSH board of directors in late 2013 with the intent of assisting eligible South Mississippi State Hospital employees with expenses for continuing education. Funding for the project is provided through the Friends budget and contributions by other donors. The program’s goal is to assist deserving employees with the expense of continuing education that will benefit the student and the hospital.
Patrick has worked as a Registered Nurse at SMSH since July 2011. He is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree through the accelerated online nursing program at University of Texas at Arlington. He is a resident of Lamar County and graduated Sumrall High School with honors in 2004. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, he earned an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Pearl River Community College in May 2011.
In addition to hands-on patient care, Patrick is involved in other aspects of the hospital. He provides support for patient family members by frequently serving on an employee panel for Family Education sessions; he is a certified Mandt instructor and is a Sapphire-level, employee Friends member. Patrick was also chosen Employee of the Quarter at SMSH for the third quarter of 2013.
“Lane is well deserving of the Friends of SMSH scholarship,” said Sabrina Young, SMSH director. “He is a compassionate nurse who looks at the bigger picture and goes beyond the requirements of his job. He genuinely cares about the well-being of the population we serve, and he does his best to share his knowledge with patient family members, SMSH staff and even with legislators who have toured our campus.”
While holding a full-time job at SMSH and managing his classwork, Patrick also teaches martial arts to children in Purvis and spends as much time as possible with his wife and son.
“Over the years, I have seen [Lane’s] dedication to our clients and his eagerness to learn new things,” said Arif Kamal, MBBS, MPH, CPM / SMSH Director V. “He always keeps an open mind toward new ideas and concepts to enhance his knowledge.”
“Lane is one of the most hard-working and dedicated nurses that I have had the privilege to work with,” said Carla Whitfield, SMSH Family Nurse Practitioner. “He shows true compassion and understanding when caring for his patients… It is obvious as one watches him perform his duties that he enjoys giving care to our patients and working at our hospital.”
